White Wash Wine Box Table Tutorial

IMG_7337

G'day friends.

I'm currently drawn to rustic in the cottage to go alongside the vintage stuff so I've been on the lookout for the last few weeks for some baskets, wooden boxes, tin pails - you know that sort of stuff.

Well on my day of treasure finding last week where I had a treasure-panic-attack I came across these wine boxes.  I wasn't really sure what I could do with them of course other than store wine in, which would be not so appropriate to me seeing as I am allergic to it.  I thought I would try them as a side table to add a bit of old rusticyness to the sitting room to place alongside that chair, which I have to say is on it's last days around here and when I find a new white two seater for this spot it will be toast...

So I snapped these little beauties up, for oh about the price of a cappuccino, full fat, no sugar and set about giving them a makeover, I wanted the result to be woody but white and still showing the lettering...

I simply added a blob of water based paint to my paint tray and topped it up with some water, mixed it round till I had a thin, sloppy consistency and then painted it on, it dried just right.

Then I turned over the top box to the side without any lettering and using No Nails glue, glued it to the bottom one.  Then added a stripe place mat to the top, securing it with the fave of blogland, which is the hot glue gun and stuck on a few flowers and a candle.

Job done.

And as Mr Teenage Beach Cottage says, easy-as-pie.  Though I'm assuming he has never made a pie in his life so completely ridiculous really.

Let me know if you have any questions...

It looks absolutely gorgeous!

Such a clever idea! Looks great.

Allergic to wine?! Is it an allergy to all alcohol or are you allowed an occasional gin and tonic? Is it that allergy where your neck, chest and face come up in a rashy type thing, because I get that too? Only with red wine though. Sorry, I've got a bit caught up in the allergic to wine thing...the table looks awesome and beautiful photo's as always.

What a great makeover. You sure do have some fabulous creative ideas.

The boxes look great! I was going to lime wash my chairs I picked up the other day but I think I might try your white wash idea instead and see how they turn out. Just wanted to share a cute thing my daughter said yesterday after discovering it was also chuck out day over your side of town.....I asked her what the best thing she did during the day was and she said 'driving around in the car with you mum looking at the garbage on the side of the road' ......I couldn't have been more proud!!

A few weeks ago, our "wine guy" came and got his empty wine bottles and crates. We didn't order any wine this season but he asked me if I'd like to keep some empty crates. I thought why not, not knowing what I was actually going to use them for. But now you have given me this great idea, thank you! You're a gem!

Just gorgeous. You are THE QUEEN of thrift and style. A-M xx

I love this project!! I have an empty space in my kitchen that I have been wanting to fill for a long time. This will fit perfectly in that spot!

It is beautiful! And that doesn't even look difficult. Thanks for sharing with us how to do it!

How gorgeous is that???

Love it!

:)

You make everything look easy. I am stealing this idea for sure! Thanks.

I just clicked on your collage, which took me to flickr, and I realized that I already had it "faved" and that you're in Whispery White Wednesday too. Small internet world we live in! Your blog is divine!

I'd whitewash my husband if he'd stand still long enough ;-) Now, where's that old, dark, ammo crate?

did you not primer the boxes first? how do you keep the paint from flaking off? no varnish?
sorry for so many questions, but i just bought some of these boxes for this project and want to make sure i do it right :-) unfortunately they charged me $10 each at the liquor store as i couldn't find any in another way :-\
